Reader’s Question:

I heard from a friend that he’s been a victim of Florida vehicle insurance fraud. He declined to tell me what happened, he just told me to be careful regarding car insurance stuff. Can you give me tips on how to avoid this kind of fraud? Thanks so much!

I’m sorry to hear that Lena. I also know someone who was a victim of Florida vehicle insurance fraud. And I’ve researched on things on how I can avoid this.

According to the Florida Division of Insurance Fraud, these are things that one needs to do to avoid being a victim of Florida vehicle insurance fraud:

  • Be very careful especially when you received a phone call after an accident happened. This caller might be someone who’s trying to get you into a fraud scheme.
  • Know to compare vehicle insurance rates before you go ahead and purchase one, especially you’re being offered car insurance rate that’s too low compared to others.
  • If you are renewing or buying car insurance, check first with the Florida Division of Insurance Regulation, to find out if you’re getting policy from a licensed car insurance agent and company
  • I bet that you are giving outmost protection to your credit card numbers, do the same with you car insurance card.
  • Do not even think of writing a premium check to your car insurance agent. All checks should be written to your car insurance company.
  • Review your auto insurance bills on a regular basis. Make sure you receive your bills regularly.
  • Do not ever sign a blank car insurance form.
